Texas county sheriffs are elected law enforcement officers who are responsible for a number of duties, including: 

  • Enforcing the law: Sheriffs are licensed peace officers who enforce criminal laws, investigate crimes, and enforce traffic laws. 
  • Managing the jail: Sheriffs are responsible for the management and operation of the county jail. 
  • Security: Sheriffs provide security for the courts. 
  • Serving papers: Sheriffs serve warrants and civil papers.
